This 3 day battle, July 1-3, to a great degree, determined the outcome of the Civil War. General Lee had brought his Army of Northern VA into Pennsylvania, hoping to threaten Washington D.C. and perhaps win recognition and aid of European powers. At the end of the battle, Confederate troops retreated South, never again would they come so close to D.C., to victory, or so far North. Because Vicksburg, MS fell to Grant the very next day, it represents a major turning point in the war. The city of Vicksburg, MS is situated high above the Mississippi River on a series of bluffs. The city effectively prevented Union transport or traffic on the all-important waterway. U.S. Grant laid siege to the city, firing some 2,800 cannon shells into the city everyday until its people surrendered. Grant's victory at Vicksburg gave control of the Mississippi back to the Union. An elated Lincoln declared the significance saying, "The father of waters once again flows un-vexed to the sea."
