- stopped the constant attacks by the Danes in the 9th century
- became the first king of England
- was an enthusiastic patron of literature
- translated various Latin works
- mostly important - Boethius' 'Consolation of Philosophy'
- instigated translation of Bede's 'History' and beginning of the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' (yearly record of important events in England)
