- originated with Owen Tudor- ambitious Welshman with no claim to the throne but married Catherine of Valois (widow of Lancastrian king Henry V)
- grandson = Earl of Richmond (first Tudor monarch)
- led the army that defeated the reigning Yorkist king Richard III at Bosworth
- Richard was crowned Henry VII
- married Elizabeth of house of York (united the cornws)
