- James Macpherson claimed to have found the verses of a Gaelic poet from the Dark Ages
- said to have introduced a new kind of sublime
- 'Ossian' wrote out of love which contrasted to Pope writing out of performance
- shifted feeling towards a consideration that actually comedy was a low form and not an intelligent activity, this highly emotive poetry was more accomplished
