- especially due to the inland travel encouraged by the French revolution because the continent was effectively closed off to travellers(appetite was whetted by the craze for Ossian - travellers wanted to experience the new sublime)
- comes to undergird the Romantic Movement
- mediated between the mildness of the 'beautiful' and the terrifying extremity of the 'sublime'
