“A Collection of Poems
by Several Hands”
by Robert Dodsley (jan 1, 1748 – jan 1, 1758)
Description:
- collection of verse that made contemporary poetry a matter of high moral seriousness
- prior to this, post-Restoration: publishers had issued anthologies, miscellanies, and compendia of verse, ephemeral works, jokes, and literary fragments
- BUT: these had remained something of a second-class form, a patchwork creation slapped together from left-over poems and pamphlets
