- response to the Enlightenment in Europe
- more cosmopolitan that 2nd Great Awakening
- new light vs old light
- new: lots of emotion (eg George Witfield)
- old: less emotion (eg Jonathon Edwards)
- create personal relationship with god
- colleges: Brown, Princeton, etc
- literacy increased–more access to religious books
- seem as "anti-intellectual" because it "dumbed down" religion
