Mali Empire (jan 1, 1235 – dec 31, 1610)
As the Ghana Empire slowly declined in North Africa, trade routes began shifting down towards the savannah causing various settlements and states to grow economically.
One of these such places was a small kingdom of Mandinka people living in West Africa. This kingdom developed through the 11th and 12th Centuries until establishing themselves as the largest empire in West Africa around 1235.
This Mali Empire covered much of modern-day Mali, Senegal, and the Gambia becoming renowned for being the largest producer of gold and it's kings were some of the richest people in history.
