Schoenberg was an expressionist. He believed in Freud's theories of the unconscious, and that music could tap into a primal level of the unconscious. His wife left him for another lover, causing a dark period in his composition. He thought that diconance should be emancipated and that music is imprisoned by consonant resolution.
