Quasi-War (jul 7, 1798 – sep 30, 1800)

Description:

An undeclared war fought almost entirely at sea between the US and France, Caused because the US refused to pay debts to France for assisting in the Revolution, claiming it was owed to a previous regime. France was also upset about Jay's Treaty, claiming that they would rather help an old enemy than an old ally. A two year series of naval skirmishes ensued. Adams, desperate for the conflict not to escalate, rejects his party's anti-French ideals and opened negotiations with the European nation. Crying treason, many Federalists withdrew support for Adams, contributing to his loss at re-election.

Casualties:
514 Americans
Unknown French
