Underground Railroad (jan 1, 1850 – jan 1, 1860)
Description:
The Underground Railroad was active in the city during much of the 1850s. Eliza Harris, whose escape to the North was described in Uncle Tom's Cabin is said to have arrived in Sandusky in the fall of 1850. Another notable incident involved Rush Sloane, who helped to secure the release in court of several fugitive slaves who were being held for return to the South. Sloane was later sued by one of the slave owners for $3000 in damages.
