Criminalization of
Black Women's Sexuality (oct 10, 1864 – mar 10, 1873)
Description:
"Across the country, Black women were arrested and incarcerated for purported prostitution offences at vastly disproportionate rates. Between 1864 and 1873, Black women were 3 percent of the population in Halifax but made up 40 percent of incarcerated women, and a large percentage of these were likely to be serving prostitution-related sentences (fingard 1984 in Backhouse 1985: 401)."
