'Amistad' Mutiny (1839) (aug 1, 1839 – may 30, 1841)

Description:

"Africans aboard the Spanish slave ship 'Amistad' commit mutiny. The mutineers detour the ship from its destination in the Caribbean and it lands off the coast of Long Island, New York. There, the captives plea for freedom in U.S. courts.

Two years later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the 'Amistad' mutineers had been illegally transported and held as slaves, and had rebelled in self-defense. After staying at Underground Railroad stations, the mutineers returned to Africa."
