New York & Philadephia:
Anti-Abolitionist Riots (1834-35) (nov 9, 1834 – sep 7, 1835)
Description:
"Both New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, experience riots against African Americans and anti-slavery advocates. Anti-abolition riots subsequently break out in major cities across the Northeast.
Many Northerners thought that immediate abolition would threaten the economy and culture of the U.S. Anti-abolitionist sentiment in many northern cities was also fueled by resentment of black freemen among recently arrived immigrants from Ireland."
