Berlin Blockade (jun 24, 1948 – may 12, 1949)
Description:
One of the first major international crises of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' methods to access areas of Berlin under Western control. The soviets offered to remove the blockade if the Western Allies removed the newly introduced DM (Deutsche Mark) from West Berlin. The blockade aimed to starve the western Allies out of the city; however instead of retreating, the United States and its allies supplied their sectors of the city, which is now known as the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Airlift lasted for more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and other goods to West Berlin.
