Atlantic Slave trade 1526-1867
12.5 million captured men, women, and children were put on ships in Africa with 10.7 million arriving in America. The transportation by slave traders of enslaved African people, mainly to America. The significance of the Atlantic slave trade was to obtain labour as the population of the new world had declined because of the lack of immunity against imported pathogens.
