Soviet Invasion of Afghaistan (feb 15, 1959 – dec 25, 1979)
Description:
Starting out with thousands of troops being sent into Afghanistan, this attempt by Moscow is to stop civil war and maintain a friendly government.
- This was the fist event where the Soviet Union invaded a country outside of the Eastern Bloc.
-Most of the world condemned the decision to invade.
-Before withdrawing millions and billions of dollars were spent.
-As a result of the shattered country the Soviets had created, it was later the perfect breeding ground for terrorist leaders and groups.
-This ten year intervention, was seen by some as a show of the Soviets power.
