The Battle at Coral Sea (may 4, 1942 – may 8, 1942)
Description:
The Japanese sought of cut off America's ally Australia by capturing their northern neighbors the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. This operation failed when US Pacific forces led by Chester Nimitz and the Japanese forces met. While no shots were fired from the boats at close range, the battle was fought in the air and conducted 200 miles apart. The US won the battle and saved the Solomon Islands and New Guinea.
