The government, the army, and other security officials did not agree with Perestroika's policy. These people gathered in the State Emergency Committee. It was headed by Gennady Yanaev. He became the acting President of the USSR. But Yeltsin and his supporters were able to defeat the putschists. After that, Yeltsin did not want the Soviet Union to exist.Added to timeline:
