Mexican War of Independence (3h 50min, jan 2, 1810 y – 15h 34min, jan 4, 1821 y)

Description:

Slavery was an issue that occurred in Latin colonies like Mexico that put harsh living conditions to the natives of the land. Mexico first called for independence on September 15, 1810 from a freedom cry called by creole priest Father Miguel Hidalgo. He gave a speech that was well known as “el Grito de Dolores” which means the cry of Dolores. His call caused for Mexicans to fight for “Independence and Liberty.” Hidalgo managed to gather an army of poor mestizos and Native Americans to march out to outskirts of Mexico City. At first, Hidalgo had managed to attain some other creoles but they later turned against him due to Hidalgo’s conditions of an end to slavery and improved conditions for Native Americans. José Morelos was another priest that supported the revolt and led the army for four years until he was shot and killed in 1815. In 1820, Spanish liberals forced their king to make a constitution. This alarmed Agustín de Iturbide, another creole, who feared that this constitution might impose liberal reforms. He reached out to the Spanish government in 1821 and overthrew the Spanish viceroy with all the other revolutionaries. Mexico was lifted from Spanish rule but the revolution didn’t change lives for most Mexicans.
