CURRENT COMMUNITY LIVING IN AREA OF CCCC (AND THROUGHOUT IOWA & USA) (jan 2, 1840 – jan 1, 2020)

Description:

There are currently a little over 20,000 people living in Washington County. When the county was established in 1838 the official population was only 283, although the census excluded Sauk and Meskwaki communities, which had recently included almost a thousand people within 5 mi of CCCC. By the time most Native Americans had left and the CCCC property was bought by John Graham and Henry Williams in 1840, the county's population had reached 1,594. Mennonites began living in the area during the 1850's, setting up their first two congregations within a few miles of here, but eventually spread all throughout the nearby counties. Crooked Creek Christian Camp was established by members of local Mennonite churches, and receives support today from various congregations in Iowa, but the first Mennonites known to have lived on this property did not come until 1944.

There were over twenty different families that lived on these 300 acres between the first land sales in 1840 and the camp's establishment in 1980. Among these families were civil war soldiers, a millionaire land speculator, local government officials, French and Irish immigrants, a 19th century restaurant owner, a minister, farmers, and community leaders. For the past four decades the place we call "Camp" has been experienced by thousands more people of many types as CCCC has sought to fulfill its mission of serving in “the spiritual development of children and adults in the Midwest…”
