Panama Canal (jan 3, 1903 – aug 25, 1914)
Description:
Construction lasted from 1903 to August 1914.
The need for a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans led to the construction of the Panama Canal, ensured by Theodore Roosevelt. The canal allowed businesses to ship goods more cheaply between the oceans. The Panama Canal treaty of 1903, signed by the U.S. and Panama granted the US access to the canal zone, and 5 miles to either side of it. Some panamanians believed that this infringed upon their newly acquired right to national sovereignty.
