East 100 acres- Therion Family (jan 2, 1860 – jan 1, 1920)

Description:

Most of the East 100 acres were owned by the Therion family for at least 50 years. John Therion immigrated to the United States from France around 1860, and soon moved to Washington County to work as a wagon-maker. It is fun to imagine how he might have pronounced his last name, and one also wonders if “John” was his English replacement for Jean or some other name entirely. Theresa Therion (originally Theresa Heiniman) was also French, but had already been living in the United States for many years when she married John. Their son Arthur was only 3 years old when John died in 1874. Theresa and Arthur continued to live on this property after his death, and Arthur grew up to be a successful farmer and community leader. He did volunteer work encouraging support for the troops in Europe during World War I, served as assessor for Marion Township, and was involved in a couple of community clubs. Mollie Putman and Arthur were married in 1999 and had three kids. Howard Burrell’s History of Washington County makes note of the Therions’ “substantial outbuildings which furnish shelter for grain and stock,” so it is likely that some of the buildings on the East side of camp were built by their family.
