Bosnian Genocide (jul 13, 1985 – dec 1, 1995)
Description:
Where:
Bosnia, Yugoslavia because of its intermingling of ethnic groups (Serbs, Bosnians, and Croats).
Who:
Perpetrators were the Bosnian Serbians. Similar to the Perpetrators of the Holocaust, the president of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic worked behind the scenes while Ratko Mladic, a military leader, conducted the massacres. Serbia wanted to expand and create a pure Serbia.
Victims were primarily Bosnian Muslims (Serbians were Christian, Croats were Catholic). Serbians used torture, gang rape, concentration camps, and massacres on Bosnians to carry out their "ethnic cleansing".
Number Killed:
100,000-200,000 Bosnians. Despite the small number of deaths, this genocide produced 2 million refugees.
During this time, the president of the United States was Bill Clinton. The United States took lead with NATO, and lead a bombing campaign against the Bosnian Serb army. This allowed Bosnian Croat and Muslim's to regain initiave and fight back.
