Lincoln-Douglas Debates (aug 21, 1857 – oct 15, 1858)

Description:

Stephan A. Douglas, the incumbent and nationally prominent Democrat, took no moral stance on slavery but said that government and society were made for the advancement of whites only. Lincoln argued that slavery was morally wrong and that if African-Americans could not be citizens, then immigrants could also not be citizens. These debates catapulted Lincoln into national spotlight.
