Zedekiah (21), aka Mattaniah, installed as king (mar 16, 597 BC – jun 13, 586 BC)

Description:

Born in approximately 617 BC or 618 BC, Jehoiachin's uncle, Mattaniah (21), was installed as King of Judah and renamed Zedekiah by Nebuchadrezzar. He lasted 11 years on the throne.

After rebelling against Nebuchadrezzar, the king of Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem and breached the walls of Jerusalem on 9 Tamuz in 586 BC. (~June 12, 586 BC)*

Zedekiah fled through a tunnel that led from his palace beyond the city gates, but he was captured in the plains of Jericho, and brought before Nebuchadnezzar in Riblah. There, the king's sons and many other Jewish princes were slain before Zedekiah's eyes; then his eyes were put out, and he was led in chains to Babylon.**

*(Jewish year listed as either 3175 or 3336, depending on source. I'm going with 3175 because it matches the generally accepted Gregorian date of 586 BC. These dates may change soon, as I read and incorporate additional sources and studies.)
