Quindaro Underground Railroad (jan 1, 1855 – jan 1, 1862)

Description:

The Quindaro Underground Railroad operated from 1855 until about 1862. Quindaro was stationed directly across from the state of Missouri. The area was the perfect location to assist slaves secretly escaping from Platte County, and Clay County proslavery territories of Missouri, by the use of the Underground Railroad. Slaves escaped utilizing small boats and steam ferries to cross the Missouri River. Some walked across the frigid ice of the river during the winter, desperate for ultimate freedom. They would hide in sheds, wooded bluffs, cellars, attics, and even caves along the outer vicinity of Quindaro during the day waiting until night for guidance on the routes leading North. Sympathizers like Elisha Sorter, a farmer, was known for hiding slaves on his property and caring for them. Bounty hunters could receive up to $300 for capturing slaves.
