ROME COLLAPSES (jan 1, 325 – jan 1, 476)
Description:
Roman Emperor Constantine reunites the Roman Empire. He wins a battle by putting a Christian cross on his soldiers’ shields.
In response, Christianity becomes the favored religion. On his deathbed, he becomes a Christian.
Christianity is no longer persecuted. It comes to dominate first the government, then the rest of society. Many soldiers and government rulers become Christians.
This powerful religion starts to persecute anyone who is different, calling them pagans and heretics.
Meanwhile, the Roman Empire becomes uncontrollable. Hordes of invaders from Europe, Germany, and Asia, called barbarians, start to attack its borders. The Visigoths, led by
Alaric, sack and loot Rome. Huns from the East led by Attila the Hun, invade France and northern Italy. Vandals from Germany sack Rome again. The Roman Empire in Western Europe is collapsing.
Finally, in 476 AD, the last Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus, is removed by the invaders. The Roman Empire is no more.
