Great Age of Athens (jan 1, 480 BC – nov 15, 404 BC)

Description:

Sparta is a very severe city-state in Greece which trains even its youngest citizens to serve the state. The Spartans despise the arts and shun comfort. They also force large numbers of slaves to work for them.

The Greeks defeated the Persians at the Battle of Marathon to free the Greek colonies. Seeking revenge, Xerxes, the next Persian King, then invades Greece with his vast army and, according to legend, overcomes 300 Spartans who fight to the death to hold the Pass of Thermopylae. Xerxes’ fl eet is fi nally defeated at the Battle of Salamis.

After the Persian defeat in 480, Athens is rebuilt and becomes the most powerful city in Greece. One of its greatest leaders is Pericles.
Philip II of Macedonia, in Northern Greece, unites the country by defeating all city states except Sparta.
