Meeting of the National Convention (sep 20, 1792 – oct 26, 1795)

Description:

- 749 deputies - businessmen, tradesmen, professional men.
- Formed abolition of the monarchy - 21st September
- Establishment of the republic - 22nd September
- Two opposing revolutionary factions - Montagnards and the Girondins
- the Montagnards favoured giving the poorer people more political power
- The Girondins favoured favoured a bourgeois government
- Girondins were purged from the government by the popular insurrection of May 31st - June 2nd 1793
- Because of war and internal rebellion a revolutionary government was set up
- The convention lost its legislative initiative, it's role was to approve the committee's suggestions
- Reacting to the committee's radical policies, many of the members of the convention participated on overthrowing the most influential character in the committee, Robespierre
- The Convention approved the constitution for the regime of the Directory
