Democritus possessed the first idea of the Atom: substances made up of tiny indestructible invisible particles called "Atoms." Born 460 BC, died 370 BC. Born in the city of Abdera
Antoine Lavoisier 1788: law of conservation of Mas matter can not be created or destroyed, only rearranged. Born August 26, 1743 died may 8, 1794. Lived in Paris his whole life.
John Dalton 1810-1811: Law of multiple proportions: The same two elements can combine in different compounds; ratio of the first element is fixed, while the second element varies. Born September 6, 1766, died July 27, 1844.
J.J Thomson 1897: Thomson used cathode rays to descover the electron. Born December 18, 1856 died August 30, 1940.
Ernest Rutherford 1911: gold foil experiment in which he demonstrated that the atom has a tiny and heavy nucleus. Rutherford designed an experiment to use the alpha particles emitted by a radioactive element as probes to the unseen world of atomic structure. Born August 30, 1871 died October 17, 1937.
Robert Millikan 1911: Millikan preformed the oil drop experiment, which determined the charge of electrons as negative. Born March 22, 1868 died December 19, 1953.
Marie Curie 1903: Marie determined the atomic weight of radium to be 225. Born November 7 1867, died July 4 1934.
James Chadwick 1932: Chadwick discovered the neutron. Born October 20, 1891, died July 24 1974.
Max Planck 1918: Planck discovered the Quantum theory. Born April 23, 1858 and died October 4, 1947.
Albert Einstein 1905: Einstein treated matter and energy as exchangeable. Born March 14, 1876, died April 18, 1955.
Niels Bohr 1913: Niels Bohr proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom based on quantum theory that energy is transferred only in certain well defined quantities. Electrons should move around the nucleus but only in prescribed orbits. When jumping from one orbit to another with lower energy, a light quantum is emitted. Born October 7,1885, Died November 16, 1962.
Louis De Broglie 1924: Louis De Broglie predicted the wave nature of electrons. Born August 15, 1892, Died March 19, 1987.
Erwin Schrodinger 1926: Schrodinger took the bohr atom model a step further. He used mathematical equations to describe the likelihood of finding an electron in a certain position. Born August 12, 1887, Died january 4,1961.
Werner Heisenberg 1925: Heisenberg's contribute to the atomic theory included quantum mechanics, the branch of mechanics, based on quantum theory, used for interpreting the behavior of elementary particles and atoms. Born December 5, 1901, Died february 1, 1971.
