Wilmot Proviso: A bill passed through Congress decreed that any territory gained wouldn't have slavery.
The Mexican Concession: A large sum of land gained after the Mexican war that would instigate the issue of slavery.
The Compromise of 1850: Anything above the 36° 30` latitude line was decreed free state, below was slave. This was to control slavery tension.
Uncle Tom's Cabin Published: Allowed northerners and Europeans to see the horrors of slavery.
Ostend Manifesto: Southerners tried to pressure Spain into selling Cuba, so it would be a slave territory and even out the balance of states - this enraged northerners.
Fredrick Douglass published My Bondage and My freedom: his autobiography allows people to realize the horrors of slavery.
Kansas-Nebraska Act: Undermined the Comp. of 1850 by stating territories should be able to chose anti/pro slavery by popular sovereignty.
Lincoln is elected in 1860 and soon after 11 southern states secede.
Lincoln and Douglass argued about popular sovereignty and the Dred Scott case, Douglass claimed the outcome was wrong and going against the Constitution.
Bleeding Kansas: The people tried to use popular sovereignty, although fighting ensued, resulting in the death of many.
