The voyage of twin spacecraft designed to be the first satellites to perform a fly-by on Mars. Mariner 4 successfully reaches Mars after an 8-month voyage and captures the first close-up photos. While the Mariner 4 wasn't expected to last much longer after its voyage, it ended up lasting another 3 years in solar orbit.
