The end of the Cold War marks this era sparked by the Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of glasnost and perestroika. This was soon followed by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. There were also some disasters this decade, including the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the oil spill of the Exxon Valdez, the Ethiopian famine, a huge poison gas leak in Bhopal and the discovery of AIDS.
