On the last day July 4, 1863 Lee tried to return home after the destructive battle of Gettysburg but found out the Vicksburg surrenders to General Grant being the last city on the Mississippi River that the confederates had. They decided to seize the city and day after day the Union gunned down the Confederates. The Confederates gave up six weeks later and the river was now completely under the Unions control. This siege was a major turning point in the Civil War because now the Union had the upper hand.
