The coup d'état in 1973 took place, and started the Civic-military dictatorship of Uruguay. This dictatorship ruled Uruguay for 10 years. Juan María Bordaberry , the president ruled with the military generals. This lead to most of the trade union leaders in jail, dead, or exiled to Argentina. Anything including a trade union was banned.
