while on this march some bombs from the allies were going off around them and one of the bombs hit one of the busses where the nazis kept the records of the jews. Yanek knew this was his one chance to get out because now they wouldnt know if he was a jew or not . He went the other side of the line to pretend he was a polish and right when he got through as a polish guy (right when he was free) , one of the jew ratted him out and he got put back where he was.
Once they got to the concentration camp the bobs were hitting the camp in middle of the night and one it stopped they all went back to sleep thinking it was like every other time. In the morning they weren't being woken by officers and there were no officers outside. They were free! An american officer went to the gates and took them to a place where they got their own bed , showers , toothbrushes, and plenty of food. He was finally free !
