In chapter 19, Bruno finally goes exploring on the side of the concentration camp. As Bruno walks up, he finds that it is nothing like he thinks. Bruno thought that there would be happy people laughing with coffee shops and stores. He was very wrong. There were extremely sad and hungry people all over the place, and extremely happy soldiers. This makes Bruno very sad, and it is at this point where the true horror of what is going on hits him. Just as Shmuel and Bruno leave to go off and look for Shmuel's father, the soldiers go and tell the people of the camp that it's time to go on a march. Shmuel doesn't know what a march is so he tells Bruno not to worry, but they end up going to a gas chamber. It is very warm, so everyone thinks that it is good, and they all get killed, including Bruno.
