In chapter 18, Bruno tells Shmuel that he has to leave, and move back home. Shmuel becomes so upset, because Bruno was the only reason that Shmuel was kept sane. He needs someone to talk to and to be friends with so all of the sadness of the death camps doesn't get to him. Bruno is also upset that they never got to play together, so Shmuel invites him to his side of the fence, so they can have one last adventure. Bruno, not realizing what could happen if he does this,agrees, and they go out to their adventure.
