In chapter 15, Shmuel is brought by lieutenant Kotler into Bruno's house. He is brought there to polish glasses, and Bruno becomes very excited. He starts talking to him immediately, and offers Shmuel food. Kotler finds out and asks Bruno if they were friends. Bruno tells Kotler no, and immediately feels horrible at the thing he had done. Shmuel then got in trouble for "stealing" the food, which caused him to get punished, and beat. This really changes Bruno's perspective on the situation, and his denying caused more problems than it solved.
