In chapter 13, Bruno learns that Pavel, the cook, is actually living in the death camp. This is the exact reason that mother had told Pavel he was not allowed to take responsibility for helping Bruno when he hurt himself. Father would not appreciate a Jew, as horrible as it is, stitching up his son. Bruno had always assumed that Pavel was just there to be there cook. Now that he knows the truth, Bruno becomes more aware of Pavel's appearance. He notices that Pavel is small, skinny, underfed, sad, and not mentally straight anymore. Pavel became ill, and while serving wine, he dropped the bottle. The Luitenant got upset, so he just shot him, and it was very sad for Bruno. This chapter is very important in the plot because it is the moment Bruno realizes how serious the Nazis are, and he starts to think less of his father because of what has just happened.
