This battle was the first major battle of the war. It was such a short battle with thousands of casualties that it shocked the spectsting world.. Even though the Union won, they still lost, the general was fired by Abe after the battle. This shows the severity and also how Lincoln did not want this war to have as nearly as many casualties that it was taking. There were 23,000 casualties and it was so much it even made Lincoln decided to pass his emancipation proclamation on the 22nd.
