In chapter 10, Bruno goes out to do some exploring. He walks for a long time, but eventually he comes to a spot at the fence where he can't walk any further. So he stops to take a rest. While he is resting, he sees a spot in the distance coming toward him. That spot turns into a boy. On the other side of this fence, he meets the boy. The boy's name is Shmuel. Shmuel is living in the concentration camp, and likes to take walks out to the fence to get away from all of the horror in the camp. Bruno and Shmuel start talking, and they become friends. While Bruno is listening, he doesn't really understand that Shmuel is really dealing with something bad here, and he just thinks of Shmuel as his friend, and a boy just like him.
