The Dakota on the reservation was suffering. And to make matters worse on August 17th, 4 Dakota men kill 5 settlers, and convinces Dakota leader Little Crow to lead a fight against the traders and settlers. On August 18th the Dakota killed traders and government employees. Most of the Dakota soldiers were young men, but most Dakota decided not to fight.
