After the horrendous mismanagement of James Buchanan, the country wanted a new president. Only one problem: they couldn't decide who. The brand-new Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln, who wasn't officially anti-slavery, but was very anti-states rights and favorable to the North. The Democrats were split between the more moderate Stephen Douglas, a proponent of popular sovereignty, and the southern John Breckinridge, who supported slavery in every state. John Bell was the choice of border Whigs, who wanted slavery but also opposed nullification and secession. In the end, Lincoln won, with only 40% of the popular vote and not a single electoral vote from a Southern state. All his support came from the Northeast. This angered the southern states very much, as they now had a candidate who they did not vote for as president, and who would certainly limit their power. It almost certainly was the last straw for the South, and the main cause for secession.
