A lot of Georgians did not like the Compromise of 1850. However, congressmen Howell Cobb, Alexander Stephens, and Robert Toombs persuaded the citizens of Georgia to deal with it. At a convention in Milledgeville, the "Georgia Platform" was approved, and Georgia did not try to nullify or secede the Compromise. Georgians founded the Constitutional Union Party, which helped greatly in achieving this. After its goals were achieved, it dissolved, and some of its members started the Know Nothing Party. At the end of this confusion, the Democrats emerged as the leading party in Georgia.
