In late 1819, Missouri wanted to become a state. Free states were opposed to this because Missouri's constitution allowed slavery and making Missouri a state would give slave states more representation in the Senate. Slave states, naturally, loved this idea. Thus, a compromise had to be made. Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. In addition, it was decided that slavery would be banned north of Missouri's southern border (36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude) in the Louisiana Purchase lands. This created conflict because both the North and the South hated the plan, but dealt with it. The Northerners would redouble their efforts to get rid of slavery, and the Southerners would redouble their efforts to keep it.
