German physicist, Ernst Abbe ( January 23, 1840,-January 14, 1905) was the first optical engineer to design and build lenses based on sound optical theory and scientific laws, rather than the
''hit-or-miss approach''.
He formulated a mathematical theory connecting resolution to the wavelength of light. Abbe's formula makes calculating maximum resolution in microscopes possible.
