On March 8 of 1917, angry demonstrators took to the streets of Petrograd. On March 11, the military forces there were called to quell the riots, but they were unsuccessful. The frustrated military forces unexpectedly switched their support to the demonstrators. Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the throne, but his brother refused to take the reins of the country. Thus, the Romanov Dynasty ended, and the Provisional Government was founded.
