Kerensky was once a member of the Socialist Revolutionaries, and had also been at one time a member of Nicholas II’s Duma. Because of this, the working class saw him as a good representative of their ideals. Thus, he was elected leader of the Provisional Government in July of 1917. Previously, he had served as the Provisional Government’s “Minister of Justice,” and then as “Minister of War.” Kerensky made a few errors during his governing, and Lenin began to gather more and more support. Kerensky, interested in keeping power from Lenin, called for an election. Lenin could not refuse this, as he had called for such a thing in the past. All evidence suggested the Kerensky would win the election, so Lenin organized a coup d’etat (November Revolution) which ended the Provisional Government and ousted Kerensky along with it.
